Contact meBolesław Biegas (1877–1942) — distinguished Polish-French Symbolist sculptor and painter.
Bolesław Biegas was born on November 2, 1877, in Szumowo, Mazovia. A peasant's son and self-taught artist who, through the sheer force of his talent and determination, escaped poverty to become one of the most recognizable Polish artists in early-twentieth-century Paris.
He studied sculpture in Warsaw before moving to Paris in 1901, where he spent the rest of his life. He quickly gained recognition at the Paris Salons, exhibiting expressive, Symbolist sculptures full of drama and spirituality. His works are characterized by an intense inner expression — human faces in ecstatic rapture, intertwined bodies conveying metaphysical tensions.
Biegas was not only a sculptor but also a painter of mystical, visionary compositions. His paintings, full of religious and cosmic symbolism, constitute a separate, fascinating chapter in the history of Polish Symbolism. The artist's works entered museum collections in France, Poland and the United States.
In later life, Biegas fell into obscurity. Today he is being rediscovered as one of the most original representatives of Polish and European Symbolist art at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
